I seem to remember a spate of threads laughing at the pointlessness of wind power

Well as of posting this wind is producing the biggest proportion of our energy (32.6%)

In fact, we are even exporting some of it abroad

I like wind turbines, clean, cheap, easy to replace relative to most other energy producers.

Whats interesting about wind turbines is when you look up who owns the land and sells the licenses that they sit on...does make me wonder if theres a sort of financial benefit to some peoples green agenda!

But in principle they're great...not so sure what would happen if we built billions of them and extracted that much energy from the natural environment.

Interestingly, I was reading an article the other day (can't be arrissed looking for a link) about a project (Kickstarter?) to fit a small vertical turbine wind generator to each lamp post/sign post on motorways.
I *think* the figures suggested that just retrofitting them on the M1 would generate enough electric (from vehicle wind shear) to cover the UKs entire energy usage.
That's wind energy that is just, at the moment, generating tree movement and traffic noise.

It would be less windy? Better extract from the environment and keep the oil and gas for important stuff, like petrochemicals and artificial fertiliser, rather than burn it.

Don't think anyone has even bothered to study it.

Nuclear seems about the only sensible choice at the moment to back up other sources...but theres plenty of issues with it of course.

The black smoke probably comes from the large work boats slogging in and out of Barrow down the Walney channel day in day out to service the Walney wind farm, often fighting against the strong tidal flow. All these boats are running on diesel. I wonder what that costs. Have been told that they go out even when they know it's too rough for them to work but they still get a turn out payment?
