There is a thing called Fischer-Tropisch conversion (I'll have to check the spelling) whereby all sorts of 'waste' materials - anything containing carbon compounds I believe -- can be converted into hydro-carbon fuels, leaving behind solids of compounds left after carbon compounds have been extracted. Oi fink der Nazi scientists may have been the originators. Not sure.
Methane - for years after they're capped-off, the landfill sites make huge amounts of methane. You used to be able to see it being burned off on some sites via pipes that stuck out of the ground.
