Cotswold Airfield, the old RAF Kemble site had a retired Squadron Leader move in nearby & complained about the noise & flying. If anyone should have known, he should.

I wonder if some people are doing it intentionally for profit, buy a house beside something with money and start complaining until you get paid to shut up.

You can absolutely bet on that, in some cases.

It’s the same thing happens with shooting grounds. People move next to or near them, knowing full well they’ll hear bangs then start complaining.

I wonder how they manage on bike track days?

Sadly becoming a common thing now with nimbys coming to live beside race tracks and complaining about the noise.

One of them got Nutts Corner race track more or less closed for a good few years due to the noise. He was made very generous offers to move house but dug his heels in.

Then suddenly he decided to accept their offer and moved away. There is a story that he got a visit from some people who made him an offer he couldn't refuse.

Track is fully open again and a full racing schedule, though there is a generous noise restriction.

Part of the issue is that the headers and engine emit noise and are “within earshot” of the tester, on a bike some of the noise is absorbed by the radiator/fairings.
One of the testers suggested I move the exhaust outlet further back and turn it to point to the floor. The car will still make the same amount of noise but the sound meter will just hear less of it

The common trick for rally cars is to stuff some wire wool up the tail pipe. Lasts long enough to get through scrutiny and will get blown out somewhere along the rally stage.

Wouldn’t work for track days at Oulton Park. There are three monitors round the circuit, you might pass static test but exceed the circuit limit going round. People have been black flagged when over the limit and if you can’t reduce it off you go. With regards to locals, back in the sixties and seventies there were no noise limits at race meetings but as they were only at weekends complaints were limited. Now there are several track days a week on top of the racing and with much bigger tyres on cars a lot more tyre noise.

It will almost certainly sound worse as the noise will be reflected back.

They built three new homes next to the heritage railway (I'm a volunteer on it) .One owner complained about noise and smoke etc said he didn't realise steam loco's did this. (WTF) The railway runs on a Sunday in summer months 3 to 4 times a day closed winter months. His two neighbours are quite the opposite no probs at all.

He was probably hoping you would give him an annual ticket to ride for free to shut him up.

I found wire wool gets interestingly hot and blows lumps of sparks out the back. Soon, there's nothing left except the forest fire behind you.
Stainless steel scouring pads work much better for staying in place, but you need to experiment with how many, and keep an eye on restriction. They're relatively free-flowing, but not entirely.

Thanks all for the comments on the noise thing, but it really isn’t an issue with 2 silencers, both straight thru so no restriction.
