bicycle repair stand

My nephew wants me to make a stand for him ,i've had a quick look on eblag and got a few ideas ,just wondering if anyone has made one ?.....what size clamps will cover most bikes?....any body got some pics,especially of the clamp ,many thanks Gav

Take a trip to Halfords..........sure they will have one!

I'd be interested to see what you come up with. Bike repair stands are a bloody rip off, the only tricky bit is the clamp, no idea where you could buy something suitable though.

I knocked one up years ago, modelled the clamp after the Kestrel stands type (loosely at least, was knocked up with what was to hand one afternoon). It's NOT much to look at, but the clamp floats like many of the kestrel ones to accomodate different tube diameters.

Jaws of the clamp are some 25x25 ally angle, rest of the clamp is made from some tube and plate offcuts. Not something i can describe easily without pics, will take some another day

What I did was have a piece of box section held vertically in a vice with the bike holder on the top of the box bit if that makes sense so it did not get in the way all of the time.

The vertical box ended at about shoulder height, there was a right angled joint on top like a gallows, braced to the vertical element.

On the end of the sticky out arm was a horizontal piece of box with a pair of U shaped holders about 8" apart for the top tube of the bike to rest in with padding and straps to hold it down. Coming down from there was a piece of box to strap the seat tube to to stop the bike swaying about. Worked a treat, you could pedal it while adjusting the gears and everything.

I made some for a local bike cooperative that were free standing, just bolted to the floor. You dont need fancy pants brackets and clamps, a decent sized and well padded U shape works fine.

Thanks for the replies ,will have to be freestanding ,portable would be best,he spoke of a clamp on the seat stem and is quite happy to use old inner tubes to protect the stem ....food for thought ...any pics would be useful,..prefer to use a tried and tested rather than re-invent the wheel ......cheers all Gav

What's the chance of that, I started work on one on wednesday and have just got in from doing more work on it tonight!

knocked a frame up out if 25x50 box i had here ,i will prob beef up the rod attachd to the bike clamp it was all i had here and i had to wait for a courier pick up,so couldn't go out and buy anything,,,,,thanks for all replies Gav

i will get soem pics of my stand later
i brought one as i do alot of work on some very expencive bikes (my own (up to £6k)) and i wanted something i can throw into the back of my car and use it at races etc( and no i dont wear licra)
and tbh mine cost me £60 and i dont think it was too bad, compared to alot of bike shops selling basic ones for over 100

would think that was cheap.....brand new ?.........compared with kestrel link earlier......still nephew was happy with his ,doesn't fold as small as yours but fitted in his corsa

Forgot to take a pic of mine. The Kestral stuff i linked to is stupidly expensive, aimed more at workshop use in a shop environment they're big heavy things that don't flex/bounce around when working

As you say, yours does the job, fits in his car and is probably stiffer than many of the commerically available ones

well in alot of the bike shops hat i learnt my tricks in all they used was 2 big rope loops from the roof, one goes round the seat and other around the stem. and i have this set up in my work shop. i have the stand if i am working on my bikes, due my workshop isnt really bigenough for my DH bike to be worked on in.

and it was cheep, but not the cheepest.
i would recomend chainreactioncycles
