If the material is that weak, then it could well be a material defect. Regardless of the fact that this is a relatively low price item it is safety related with potentially lethal consequences, like failing in traffic for example. Campag should know about it.

This is why I always use shimano components.
Never seen anything like this, as said poor set up can cause failure or maybe little Sammy Stickwell ( the cycling version of Nerg Nail)was on a suicide mission.
Sounds to me as though the mech csught a spoke and kertwang, they are fragile components.

George, forgive me I've not read the whole post, am short on time.
Just to say, I contacted Hayes about my crappy MTB disc brakes - outside of warranty - and they are replacing/upgrading them free of charge (had to post my old ones back). So there is hope even if you have official come-back.

It should be against the law to use fragile materials on structural components like that. I could have been killed as I don't always ride on cycle paths. Cars have to pass design type tests, including crash damage assessments, don't they? Would a car be approved for sale to the general public if key suspension components were made from some low grade composite rather than from steel? All hell breaks loose when there's a safety recall on a vehicle component. Why should 'anything go' as far as proprietary bicycle parts are concerned? I remain convinced that my DIY handlebar repair will prove much stronger and longer lasting. How can Campagnola's products be of such low quality? I'm now on 666 posts - the sign of the devil.

Forgive me here but you are ranting (yes) ranting on about a component failure that may or may not cause an accident. AND then in the next sentence you proudly announce you have "repaired" and pair of handlebars. FFS
As I have stated this has happened to me twice to be correct. One time at speed downhill offroad. It locked the back wheel up but I didn't fall off.
I dread to think what would have happened if the bars had failed, yet you seem happy to ride around with a repaired set.

Shox Dr - I'm only expressing surprise and disgust with bike parts design standards which could have had me killed. Is it a rant when someone's brakes fail in a car and they tell you how they feel about the manufacturer? Why have you started ranting, including the use of an abbreviated four letter word? It's like your accident was 'just one of those things', that you don't hold anyone responsible and your safety isn't a concern.

Rear mech's are not structural, they are a flippy floppy assemblage of springs and metal/plastic that weigh B'all and operate a ridiculous system for changing gear ratio. They stick out in about the most vulnerable area on a bike, get filled with cack, rarely maintained, they operate by being pulled with a piece of wire, full of grit, It does my head in that they work at all, let alone last for years and years if you are lucky. I had one stop me from 30mph with a stick in the wheel and still work, I have had others go wonky for no reason at all.
Effectively they push the chain off a sprocket hoping it will land on the next sprocket. A true anachronism. Ok one that works and does it's job but still a silly idea. Hub gears are a much better idea if you like spending several hundred pounds to get a decent range of gears. So for now I will go with mid range shimano stuff and treat them as a consumable item.

Hey George, just woundering if you could post some pictures of the rest of your bike, namely the rear derrialer hanger and the front chain rings, I'm interested to try and find out what caused it seeing this thread has so much "interest" at the moment.
The cycle industry has some of the most stringent testing out there and its geting harder. I am worknig with a designer at the moment for a protype of a new product, even before we can start machining alot of companies want proof of consept before in CAD to prove that the materials and form can make bench mark. Even after that stage the product would then have to under go real world testing
The part that you broke is not under any presser when your riding as said by myself and other members. Some external force has been applied for this to happen and it would of mattered if this part was made form alu or plastic the result would of been the same.
If there was anything wrong with the mech there would have been a product recall, in fact I was on the phone to the uk supplier this morning and asked the question if they have had any problems with these mech and they never have.

i thought that rear derailleurs were designed to break so that they dont damage your frame where they attach to.
it is caused by 'chain suck' one of the links of your chain has rusted and seized, when it tries to go through the jocket wheels it gets stuck and your pedalling pulls the derailleur forward with alot more force than it is designed for. be thankful your frame is ok and you are too, buy a new derl'r and new chain job done
it is not imho to do with the limit screws position/settings
that connection is certainly not a structural connection either
not seen your repaired handlebars but it sounds like the stuff of nightmares to me

The point i was making is that YOU would have to prove the part was not fit for use i.e. it'd cost a damn site more than £30. As said no harm in asking/complaining but somehow i get the feeling that the way you go about things makes people less inclined to be helpful...
The frame tubing has a much bigger hole in it than that small cluster of porosity/voids... Parts virtually always break from surface defects since the highest stress occurs at the surface when bending or twisting them beyond their limit i.e. bend a piece of solid bar and the outside of the bend is placed in tension, inside of bend placed in compression. Fairly obvious that the centre portion doesn't move as far as the surface and so is under less stress. Of course if there are subsuface defects then when a part fails the break will likely expose those defects as they provide a convienient path for the fracure to follow
Lets take a closer look at the part...
Void circled in red corresponds to one of the linkage pivots (also circled in red). A fair amount of porosity (circled in yellow) but consider the scale (pic is around 4-5 times actual size)... I see more porosity in your average automotive casting yet they only make it to me after the internals machine their way out.
I find the state of the threads that attach the mech to the frame far more interesting/telling. If the mech 'just broke all by itself' while freewheeling along how come the threads got mangled if that part stayed attached?

A REAR DERAILLEUR IS NOT A STRUCTURAL COMPONENT!
There are all sorts of standards that bicycles have to meet- google BS6102, it's been superceeded but that'll get you the relevant CEN standards
At least one car manufacurer has used fibreglass for suspension springs
Car manufacturers don't issue safety recalls because of one failure and a cantakerous owner. When they do issue a safety recall their motives are based more on econmics than concern for the public most of the time...
Campagnolo made the part from 'technopolymer with glass fibre' aka some flavour of plastic with some chopped strand glass mixed in
As comparisons have been made with the automotive world cars are subject to MOTs after 3 years of age (how old is your bike again?) as THE OWNER is responsible for maintenance...

Thanks to everyone for the useful analysis and obervations. All I know is that I've been riding around on bikes with derailleur gears for decades and this has never happened before. I think all the previous rear mechs were made of steel and I doubt if they would have snapped off. The detached component hit the spokes and it could have been fatal. This simply can't be right. The bike manufacurers have failed in their attempt to make the bike safe, especially as some of you say it's not all that rare for the rear mech to come off (with modern bikes).
I bet the garages would have said that, the week before the Japanese had to recall millions of cars a few months back. And do you think the UK supplier would tell you even if they knew of major issues? Of course not.
I cant see how the bike manufacurers have failed.
Rear derrialers are designed and always have been to come away from the frame if it fails or gets hit. when frames where mass manufactured in steel the mech had an alu centre bolt which was designed to break when over loaded. Now most frames are built with alu they have a removable drop out hangers that again are designed to snap in the case of over load.
I manage a workshop that repairs over 100 bike a weeks this is not uncommon and its not a fault of the mech, personaly i'd be looking at the state of your drive chain becuase it could happen again if the problem is not sorted.
