This system seems to have been around forever. Had a set like that on my first bicycle back in 1962.

Hi viz is so important, I have stopped kids riding bikes with no/failed lights before now and given them a hiviz out of my van.

I remember "Schwinn" was engraved on the generator part, and the wires simply attached by slipping the ends through spring loaded clips.

I say use flashing lights because I had a close shave a few years ago. Heavy traffic at a junction about 30 yards away. Bad weather. I went to pull out. Almost didn't see a cyclist heading towards me. His light had merged with all the others. Flashing I would have spotted it much easier.

Are flashing front (white) lights legal? generally oncoming traffic is on the opposite side of the road so assuming they are legal, a nuisance at best. I've no problem with variable intensity rear (red) lights on cycles as they draw your attention to something on the same side of the road as me.

Small price to pay for knowing where a vulnerable cyclist is, I am no fan of cyclists but I can appreciate the importance of being seen.

Until the blinding flashing makes a dog or pedestrian less visible? As I said, the red lights I can see the point of, the front-facing ones..... most are like a car with main beam on with added strobing coming towards you. Fair enough, if they want to draw attention to themselves but why be a hazard at the same time? forward facing lights can strobe and be downward-facing with the same attention-seeking without having to affect oncoming drivers night vision.

ETA - one of the reasons front & rear lights are the colour they are is that human eyes are more sensitive to red lights by 4:1

The hub was part of the system, there used to be rechargeable batteries in a steel tube clamped to the bike frame, dyno hub charged these and there was enough battery storage to give you lights for the brief period you were stationary.

I have an ampp 500 which i use on the 250 lumen setting which lights the road well enough to see pot holes and it gets seen from front and side on. I use 2 rear lights, one constant, the other flashes.

I have recently bought a moon meteor x auto 450 light for a gift which is rechargable but the battery is replaceable, which is not often seen. its 450 lumens on high, seems pretty good, time will tell!

Got the moon comet x auto rear light for myself at the same time as i lost one of my 2 i use, seem both to be good quality. Maybe the front one doesnt have the same heft to it as my ampp 500 though..

My other rear light is one of the apace ones you see on amazon, out lasted my other rear lights which have corroded or burtons stoped working. You dont have to break the bank to get a reliable light i have found.

Too bright and they run flat inconveniently quick!

There are many types of hub dynamo still available - popular with ultra distance Audax riders (although I prefer an old Hope light with rechargable AAs). They are quite expensive though - and obviously you have to build your front wheel onto the hub.

Proper Hi-viz (builder style) is very good, but also worth a look is the reflective gear from places like proviz, they make reasonable looking jackets that REALLY stand out when hit with another light source, like a car headlight….
