Hi, Spent a while last year looking into creating an aluminium set of bi-fold gates, using structural adhesive and additional thickness where I thought it needed. Too many unknowns to really risk the build, and mistakes won't be cheap, or simple to put right.
Space around the gate area is driving the need to have them fold back on either side, with a standard pedestrian gate coming off one of the posts.
I'm now looking at steel gates, investing in a mig, and hopefully achieving the end result with plenty of mistakes and achieving the goal, similar or cheaper total cost around £1,500
- £1,700
I've read plenty of opinions about design and spec of metal to use, so much so, I'm here asking for help as I'm not sure on anything now, nearly 60 years old, and have to think of physical limitations. I know I'm probably making concrete foundations, with rebar? (Heavy clay ground) i can get a digger for excavation, but need to bolt down posts, as handling 3 meter posts isn't an option.
To keep dimension talk simple, i'm looking at a driveway gate 2 meters high with a total of 4 meters across, made up of 4 sets of 1 meter sections that meet in the middle. These fold back against their respective posts. 1 of these posts will also have a 1.2m pedestrian gate hanging off the other side. (5,2 meter total span roughly).
Infill of the gates would be composite t&g boards.
Thoughts please?
