Ahh a good old British Colchester!
Check the end logo, that's a Clausing. (I know it's a re-badge)
Which one is it rebadged from??I guessed it would be - and as you say just a rebadge!!!
I asked as i have a master 2500.Originally a Colchester which was sold under the Clausing/Colchester name. This one is a later model with a modified saddle including oil bath and the handwheel positioned on the left (American style). Thread cutting information is also different as they were only fitted with English threading gearbox.
Various sizes available which equated to the Student or Master Colchesters over here.

What type of collet chuck is he using. It seems a low profile .Originally a Colchester which was sold under the Clausing/Colchester name. I think once i see one being fitted it might make nore sense.Hi ukracer, sorry missed this last night. He is using a 5c collet chuck that fits directly to the lathe spindle with little overhang. The system is very popular in the states and here and was the industry standard (might still be) but is being replaced by ER which is more versatile and less expensive. The 5c system reduces stick out as the collet goes down inside the spindle and can be closed at the front with a chuck key or at the rear with a draw bar. You can get a 5c to MT3 adapter so that stick out is minimal. The collet is one size only so an extensive set is required to cover the sizes.
Have you any rumble in your spindle bearings? The one drawback of Colchester lathes is that the Gamet bearings they use are made specifically for Colchester and are a unique size. A new set (still available) is rumoured to be in excess of £3k, it explains why lathes with seemingly shot beds are still fetching good prices. They do last forever though so fingers crossed it is not your problem.

Not really sure what type it is , its so long since i purchased and i am still to use it.Hi ukracer, what collet chuck have you got? I have used a backplate mounted version for the ER32 system with every success. While it does stickout a similar amount to a combined ER40/D1-4 type like this,
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/100mm-ER...30mm-capacity-30mm-through-bore-/362002974011
the advantage of the backplate mounting type does allow some adjustment to get the runout as low as possible, some people talk about the backplate moving but I have never had that happen. Also if you are using 5c then the modern type of collet chuck with a "front key" operation sticks out just as much if not more. I now use solid body collet chucks but only because I have changed to smaller lighter lathes (age thing-too heavy). For an awful lot of my jobs which are under 20mm diameter I find I am using the ER32 chuck rather than the 3 or 4 jaw as it is more accurate and just as quick really, obviously no good for anything other than round.
Three jaw chucks unless in good condition can be a right pain, they are never as accurate as claimed (grip true type excepted) and bell mouthing causes all sorts of issues. On my 6" lathe that I recently parted with I replaced the large original 3 jaw with a Chinese (yes I know) 5" and very rarely needed to use the 8" 4 jaw. Another thing to look at before you invest in too much is the condition of the D1-4 pins, they regularly wear in use and can stop the chuck pulling up correctly, this can also happen if they are adjusted poorly as well. They are available separately but still a little expensive for good ones.

I just started watching Joes videos, the height gage to help you determine the center of the lathe tool will definitely be a project I will attempt. Liked the method for getting an accurate angle too.
I asked as i have a master 2500.
Its still not right so after xmas i will be looking around for a local expert who i can get to take a quick look to see what i am missing....i am guessing its wear....but i have just not had the time to take an i depth look yet......but it dont cut like joes...ROTFLMAO
