Beware, Miller Syncrowave 500 TIG welder on ebay (120191335953)

I just thought I'd post this "heads up" about a welder for sale on ebay, that's been posted to a forum I frequent.

"Hello All,

Anyone bidding on the above, note that this is fraudulent, and the seller is asking for payment by Moneygram.

Also, the name of the seller belongs to a Consultant at a hospital in Plymouth. I've just spoken to him, and he knows nothing of the item.

Ebay is now dealing with it.

Any time you see something too good to be true, it likely is

I have seen many scams on welders. All of a sudden about 10 "buy now" deals with certified check or "email me before bidding" appear.

Report them to ebay, usually they are removed within an hour.

My sis called with an ebay # "This is soo cheap, cant be real:" 2002 ZX6R 300 miles, $1800 (normally sell for $4800.)

Emailed the guy. Asked about shipping. "Oh the bike is actually in the UK, shipping is included next day air. Payment by certified check". Yeah, right. Notified ebay and all 3 of his listings were removed within an hour.

You all have probably received emails "Ebay is updating security, you need to log in to your account" Will include actual ebay logos and all kinds of assurances about fair trading blah blah. Link is to some fake site that captures your login info. Surprisingly, many people fall for this and have their accounts hijacked.

Have probably bought 150 items off ebay. Had one bad seller, ebay refunded money (PayPal adds guarantee.) Had another lose my order, they refunded $ immediately.

Do they still make them like that? Looks a lot like my Syncro 300 which was built in 1979. Definately the same case (if you can describe something that size as a case).

Can't see moneygram involved in the listing, but the seller has zero feedback (but is selling high value items of completely different types which would be a worry) - how on earth do you find who a seller is on eBay?

theres a miller 300 going for £26 at the mo'. It sticks on HF when in DC mode, but still works fine in this way, the seller says. Item number: 360001439962
We use them at college, fantastic piece of kit.

Sweet - that's the same as mine. It's single phase with a number of voltage options (selectable on the back with jumpers) but 240V isn't always one of them. (They are intended to be used on 415V). I'm running mine on the 208V setting and it's working fine. The options vary with machine and are listed on a plate on the back.

Super welder but very big and heavy.

Well there are quite a few of them if you have 3 phase electrics. Some however can be jumpered to 240V as well, as Malcom says.

Ah yes zardoz, I do see the 3ph stuff but discount it as a rule, just thought there was more to be seen was all..... still searching for that illusive bargain.....

Seriously though, keep an eye out for those big, old so-called 3ph machines, many are actually single phase but as the owners run them off 415v they assume they're 3ph.
The good thing is that lots of people ignore the listings so bargains can be had.
My old Miller Dialarc can be jumpered to run off 240v, works fine but needs a hefty MCB. Cost me very little and came with foot pedal, water cooler, filler rods, electrodes and torch consumables.
