Bevelling Steel Plate......

I was interested to know, when prepping plate edges is there a specific angle to bevel plate to for a given plate thickness...... ?

If this is in the wrong section, which I think it may be, could a mod please move, cheers.

It's a compromise between making life easy for the welder (access) and weld volume (cost). Narrower angles = less weld volume but increase the risk of defects like lack of sidewall fusion. Larger root gaps improve access but can cause other problems depending on process and whether backing strips can be used/access to both sides exists. A J prep provides good access for the welder while reducing weld volume over a plain angled prep but is more difficult/expensive as it needs to be machined

Thick stuff isn't really my world but AFAIK 60 degree included angle (30* bevel) is the most common compromise

We usually use a 37.5 degree prep on plate and pipe on anything over 5mmish at work hope it helps

I think its mainly down to the preferance of the person doing the work to actually bevel it to whats required in termsof how thick the material is to what type of strenght they want generally i find that the thicker the material the wider the bevel has to be. After all you don't want to bend the material after you've welded it due to heat and shrinkage
