Best weight of mallet for truing flywheel/ crank assemblies?

Are we just talking pressed together cranks here? Someone mentioned LS1 cranks - I would expect that would need a big blacksmiths hammer, well used to move it? I built a 3.9 rover V8 once which had a couple of thou on the crank, my hammer size went up and up!

I always used a copper/hide mallet, but only because I didn't have a lead one. Lead imparts a much better dead blow than copper, in my opinion.

Make one. They are easy. I know I made a few.

At one engine shop they used a bar to press down. Ok it was car cranks. Is that another option?

Making a lead mallet is easy, I made a set of double molds for some. I took a piece of pipe and drilled a hole in it big enough for handles and then sawed it in half up the middle of the hole, I then welded one half to a base and clamped the remaining part with a jubilee clip. A bit of clay smeared up the joints as molten lead is like water, it WILL find the gap. Then stick the "handle" in the hole, anything will do but if you choose a bit of pipe seal the end up. Then just melt your lead and pour, works a treat every time.

I ended up with 2 thor lead mallets (I have another thor copper one at my lathe)
