Best way to straighten galavanised trailer tailgate pin keeper plate?

Galvanising actually penetrates a few thou,this is part of their pre surface treatment with acid,doesn’t just sit on the surface of the steel,however,it’s durability has been compromised,so with road salt etc,it’ll corrode before the rest.

I went for a 15lb sledgehammer as anvil, 5lb club hammer for the main adjustment, and finished off the final tweaks with my 15” King Dick

I want to see a picture of the 15lb sledge. We used to use a 12lb at the foundry for breaking core irons when I was a lad. Club hammers are typically 2.5lb.

The metal is thick enough I wouldn't worry about it corroding before any of the rest of the trailer.

Zinc may go into any pores in the metal exposed by acid but I can tell you that it doesn't penetrate into the steel.

OK - so I may have exaggerated a bit on the lump hammer - it's only 4lb....

But in compensation, the sledge is actually 16lb (I had to weigh it as it's so rusty I couldn't see any markings)

even if the galve has been scratched or chipped its self healing by galvanic action and wont rust unless its a big aeria
