Best way to press on a keyless water pump pulley?

Im really struggling to fit this new water pump pulley.

i got it on part way with an air hammer but it would just not budge so I've had to remove it again. I smeared a bit of grease on and gave it a bit of a going over with some scotch brute but now I'm wondering should I take a bit more off using some wet and dry.

I can't heat the pulley as it'll just melt the dampner!

Best way I've got it moving is using an air hammer and an impact socket but that stopped working. I'm also worried about damaging it.

Warm the pulley up 1st, that's what I normally do

How did you get the old one off?

You really need to be supporting the back end of the shaft with the pump off the engine if you're trying to force/press it on, otherwise you'll be doing the bearings in 6 months.

The rubber will survive engine bay ambient temps so you should be ok to heat it all up to 130-150°C (hot air gun rather than blowtorch or stick it in the oven). If that doesn't quite do it, try some freeze spray on the shaft too.

I tried to with the torch but the red dampner ring soon started to bubble up and melt

Do you reckon I could chuck it in the oven for 10mins on the lowest setting? (90⁰c)

just used a puller. Although it broke so this pulley is a new one

I do have a hot air gun so that's a great shout actually and with the freeze spray on the shaft.

Get an old CO2 extinguisher and cool the shaft down with it.
If heat is no good, go cold.

Hopefully can find some freeze spray locally will then bang the pulley into the oven, run outside with me oven mits on and try to get the pulley on using the air hammer as that seems to be the best way to get it on straight as opposed to a hammer where there's barely any room for swinging it!

Screwfix etc sell pipe freezer spray.

Personally, I'd just open out the back of the hole in the pulley until it knocks far enough on that I could fit a washer and 3 or 4 threads of the retaining nut. Then put a bit of grease on the thread, hold the outside of the pulley and wind the nut on.

Oven and Co2 would be my choice….it doesn't take too much temperature difference. Even putting the pulley in a bucket of hot water..
