Best way to go on pure Argon

Hi guys

My new tig set should arrive any day now :-)

I need some help and advice on the gas and were/who/what type of rental is best for me.

I am and will be a light used, probbly one bottle every year (after my pratice loads bottle )

I am in AL2 (St Albans) and my small workshop is in NW7 (Mill Hill) so any were near eaither.

I am guessing I will suit a non rental type

i got a non rent 9l bottle when i first got my TIG and it ran out in just over 2 hours of welding. When practicing 2 hours is not very long

they hold approx 1200ltrs of Argon and at 10lpm it goes fast. I now have a W sized bottle from BOC

Im in welwyn garden city and I use Barnett welding for my gas as its only in London colney right next to you

Tig is very gas heavy due to the pre/post flow and also the slow travel speed so depending on how much work you plan to do it may actually work out cheaper in the long run to go rental.
If you do go non-rental, forget the 9l ones, as Bert says, you'll get through those in no time.
Go for a 20l one and check the fill pressure too.
Send a PM to Agautosport and he will tell you where his nearest supplier to you is.
His 20 litre cylinders are filled to 200 bar, just as a comparison, adamsgas 9l ones are only filled to 137 bar.

For my mig, I am on the volkszone offer paying £29.38 for the gas & £40.98 for 12 months rent. (inc vat) size Y

just rung BOC, they quoted me £56 odd for the gas and £83 odd for the rental PLUSS the vat.

when I said, how come??????? as they are both the same size, so why was the rental differant, he said "I dont know" LOL

I wish BOC would sort them selfs out

the volkszone offer has halfprice rental, it appears not everyone at BOC knows about the volkszone offer

The VolkZone deal only applies to Argoshield Light, but not pure argon.
That might explain the difference in prices.

I quite agree, the prices are very steep, especially for pure argon, which, as Wozzaaah says, gets consumed very quickly with a tig.

If you do find that elusive cheaper way, be sure to post it up here, though!

industrial gases for me, as far as i can tell its an air products bottel

£56 to fill £7 per month to rent for 50 ltr cyl filled to 200 bar

I know some of us are on the volkzone offer, but surly, to rent me a bottle of size Y filled with argon light should still be the same for the rent (rent only) on a bottle filled with pure argon.

the argoshield light for the volkszone was as a special offer and has half price rental for car restoration enthusiasts at home. They did this to win business from the Free Rental bottle suppliers.

There are no deals for Argon from BOC as most people dont use that for car restoration

just got a argon mig 50L from air liquide miles cheeper than air products and boc
i think the refil is 35 quid all in
there pure isnt that much more than mig gas
soon as i run out my air products tig bottles going back

Click on the 'gas suppliers' link at the top this thread and all will be revealed

...at 10lpm it goes fast

Unless you're using large gas cups (say bigger than a # 7), gas lenses with loads of stickout and/or are welding in drafty conditions should rarely need flow rates higher than 7lpm for TIG

I've been using Barnet welding for about a year (10L, pure Argon, 200bar) and I can highly recommend them for rent free gas supplies.

United Welding Supplies Hitchin sell you the bottle ( Albee Botles Air Liquide ) then only charge to refill it , dont know any prices ! 5 litre bottle and 11 litre bottle at 200 bar, they statethat at 6lpm the 11 litre bottle should last 6 hours and 55 mins ! Bottles have gauges on aswell
