Hi All,
I managed to get a free Toyota Corolla 1992 (ae92) hatchback. I wish to patch it up and make roadworthy for the wife to learn how to drive.. Im anticipating she might bang it around a bit
The car had a big crack in the windscreen so I had to pull it out as it wouldn't pass a roadworthy.. It seems like the windscreen was replaced in the past so the sills are rusted by previous installer scratching up the metal surface. I've cleaned out the red/brown flakey rust with drill bit wirebursh & lightly went over it with grinder & flappy disc, but theres little shiney metal left, the rest is pitted not a level surface and I think the dark areas are iron ore ?
I've been taking MIG welding lessons on weekends as I would like to get into body work to the level where Im replacing metal in future.
Whats the best way to repair my windscreen sills ? Theres a few rust holes in the lip of where the roof skin starts probably about 8 (2 about 5mm & 10mm) and a tight group and small ones on the passenger pillar with general pitting all around.
Im not sure if cutting out and welding in new metal would be effective unless I replace the whole length of windscreen sills but then I would be worried around wrapping the roof skin, etc and will have to practise alot first..
Alternatively I could use a rust convertor on the surface, then use metal tape on the rust holes, applying a fibreglass filler on the top to smooth out.
Appreciate any advise for a decent correct repair
