A guy I work with has just bought a decent one for £2K, he does specimen fishing so needed something big enough to carry enough gear for a week, tent, rods etc.

yeah i posted the link without reading the ad, its gone now lol.
the megane seems to be behaving itself lately. locks work again, engine hasn't missed a beat and it starts properly, needs the exhaust looking at (again!) as its contacting the body but only under heavy load (like when i loaded it up after getting the van home so i could get to the next job)

and the wing mirror broke as an inocent bystander had to jump for his life as its allways the old bill who knock the public down on a chase

I've used all the above rather than a van when I was working (2nd hand books- lots of weight)
The omega, particularly - has a HUGE boot. big enough to get a 8x4 sheet of ply in.
Personally, transit all the way - preferably a banana engined late 90s 2.5Di
Bonus is you'll get plenty of welding practice

just been looking at a few mondeos. i like the mondeo as a car, infact i had one for a few weeks from my mate while i was buying the megane. very nice car.
a few going cheap too.
the missus has just pointed out that as all my gear is on show in the megane i should probably go and empty it before i have to shoot some thieving little scrote that wants to try their luck.
i was surprised it all fit in the megane, well, the genny isn't in there, or the welder or grinders, but still got reels of 10mm, 4mm, 2,5mm and 1.5mm twin and earth, tool box and bag, ladder and a bag of switch fronts, sockets etc and room to spare. fuel gauge doesn't like it but the car drives as normal, wouldn't know it was all in there.
maybe i should get the windows blacked out and put some vinyl signs on it...would be a hastle having to empty it when i need to carry people though lol

i know this is a welding forum but a landy...really lol i have considered a freelander van before now, and a disco commercial but they don't seem to be a good choice, as the discos rust faster than i can weld and the freelanders have the drivetrain issues

maybe not a land rover - dunno much about 4x4s - loved the shogun, but it drank petrol like george best and oliver reed in a distillery.
I use the transit to pull a box trailer - bit overkill for you
1.8T car (omega) + 1.5T loaded box trailer = transit capacity (near enough) with convenience of car?

right i think we are getting a bit off track now aren't we lol
after having a bit of a think, i want a van, something purposely designed to do the job i want it to, i don't want to have to black windows out and all that, i think it just makes it look more inviting to thieves, plus i can put extra locks on the van door, as i did with the tranny so i will probably strip them off before getting rid of it.
i am going to downsize to something like a berlingo or caddy size, maybe a connect again if one comes up at the right price. i will obviously have to use the megane for a few days until i can get a decent van so eyes are glued to auto trader, ebay, gumtree and so on.
i may have to sell the tranny first to get the cash for a replacement, but i know a few people that like buying dead vans to strip them so will enquire about that tuesday

that's what im thinking. its a bit late in the day to start ringing round the builders and other guys i do a bit of work for but a few of them have the citreon and Peugeot versions of the same van and seem to like it. i see a lot more of them on the road than the connects or caddies

Thinking about it, I'm sure all the black+white taxis round here use the passenger version of the berlingo.
My dad used to say that any vehicle run as a taxi is going to be a good bet for reliability and cheapness to fix.
I still think a box trailer + a regular car might be a more suitable solution for you, tho. IF you have the storage space.
