about 2 years ago i bought a small piece of tool steel from a supplier in sheffield to make a cutting tool for my lathe. the steel is chrome molybdenim, but it aint stainless, its a tool steel, the line between stainless and non-stainless blur into each other.
just had a look, interesting, as i think though the 400 series is heading into special steel, or tool steel. 300 series is getting into true stainless direction.

400 series are really the basic stainless steels. The 300 series were developed to improve the workability.
Tool steels are very different.
CrMo steels are another group altoghether, known as Creep Resistant Low Alloy steels usually employed in power generation for items such as steam pipes.
