Best type of oil for cold starts?

The old Surf is rattling when I start it from cold, it takes a few seconds before it quitens down so I was wondering what is the best oil type in general for this sort of thing. I use genuine Toyota 10w-40 semi Synthetic oil but I have no idea what it is or who makes it, I was also wondering if using a 5w-40would help.

Nothing wrong with that, especially if it only take a few seconds to go quiet Mine has done that more or less all the time I've owned it and thats 20+ years! Always use bog standard 15w-40 mineral oil and Liqi Moly oil additive, and personally I wouldn't go below 15w . Regular oil changes, occasional injector cleaner and maintenance are the key really. I doubt it's happening in your case, but one thing that is worth checking is that the fuel filter primer isn't leaking and drawing air into the fuel system. Other than that, it sounds like it's got another 100k miles in it!

If it is 2.4 2LT engine - just ignore it - they rattled from new....

If it is the 3.0 (better engine) 1KZT - I would show abit more concern. Injection pump mount/bearings fail on these - horrific expensive job.

All the later D4D engines also sound like a bag of spanners - but they do last....

1KZ-TE 3.0
(I test drove a 2.4 and thought there was something wrong with it it was that slow although as the brakes didn't work at all it was probably a good thing!)
I've heard about the pump mounts cracking, it's a big job just to have a look though.

Mate up the lane has a 2021 D4D Hilux pickup and it does indeed rattle like a very rattly thing.

I wouldn't worry about it. Surf's aren't exactly the quietest of engines. I always used 10-40W semi-synth in the 2.4. She always sounded a bit rattly on start-up. Never got any worse in all the years I had her though, so I just ignored it.

It is actually an engine rattle, & not something by/on the engine rattling?

Definitely top end but it's valves, injectors, cam everything. Maybe I'm just hearing stuff after all the work I did.

You’re definitely sowing your own seeds of doubt Like I said, mine is the 1KZ-TE and that tapping has been there during the 20+ years I’ve owned it - over the last few years it’s done three trips from the UK to the Algarve including off roading. It will be fine

Probably. Even if not, with those engines, they're tough. Just ignore it for the time being, but do a check on fluids, oil etc. weekly as a precaution. I wouldn't worry unless it becomes notably worse.

Suggests to me it's not just usual background noise - and the fact the OP is questioning it also suggests that it, as a minimum, needs a side-by-side comparison with another engine of the same type & similar age.

Not necessarily. I used to have moments with mine where I got it into my head that it sounded noisy. It soon passed.

Plus, we've had a run of cold temperatures lately, since just before Christmas. It could just be slight extra noise at startup due to it being bloody cold.

Seems to me to be a physcological as opposed to a mechanical problem - then again nothing unusual when living with a 30 year old Surf

It was definitely more noisy after the recon injectors and valve shims were done.
More ticky on the injectors and more clattery with the valves.
The valves I can understand as two or three were very tight so I've adjusted them for more clearance.
Not sure on the injectors?

Can't see why they would cause this after cleaning Did you use new copper 'o' rings before you put the injectors back in?

Yes everything was new that needed replacing BUT
The recon injectors came with new injector nozzle seat seals 11177 in the diagram below which I fitted.
They also came with some extra copper washers that never came off the old injectors this time round or when I replaced the head 12 years ago.

I called Diesel Bob and he said he always sent them out like this but didn't know much else.
The factory parts diagram only shows the nozzle seat seals I've fitted not the copper washers so that's how I built it.
Here's the parts diagram.


Any thoughts?
