Best type of handheld drill for metal ??

Hi all.

I have a lovely old Startrite pillar drill.. 50 years old. Was my dads. And the best drill I've ever used. However, it's not mobile at all and I need a really good drill that I can have on a cord in the workshop for drill up to 5mm steel..

Can anyone recommend a corded hand held drill that I'll get good performance on steel for less than £150.

Impact, rotary, hammer, tapper etc etc. I'm confused !!

Well for steel you only need rotary not impact or hammer. What size drills do you need to put through 5mm?

Theres some very good low geared drills about, great for metalworking, holesaws and such uses...
However they are a shade slow for smaller bits i find.




Metabo or Hitachi are both very good...

Yeah most drills with a 2 speed gearbox are good, but seem hard to find now?

We used to use the Milwaukee ones at work, but perhaps out of your price range really. Though I picked up a used Makita but older version as shown in the link's that I use for metal and boring holes in oak frames for not much at all..

I need 240V though. That one on ebay is 110v.

i thought that percussion drill was for driving fixings into steel,not drilling holes?

A magnetic drill might be worth looking at, as it offers the benefits of a pillar drill and is portable.
