Best time to treat my wood garden sheds?

I have a couple of wood buildings, tongue and groove. Right now the wood is so dry it is pulling gaps between the planks on the cheap shed. Is it best to leave it until the summer heat as gone and a little moisture gets into the wood before I slather on my No Nonsense Screwfix wood treatment and seal it?

I'd slap it on now. Maybe you'll use more, but at least you know that it's penetrated.

Just ordered two gallons from Screwfix, collecting tomorrow, so that's the dry weather screwed for the rest of the summer guys.

the best time is straight after a high heat when theres no rain coming as you want the wood to soak up the treatment your doing

prefereably on dull overcast days

the worst time to do it is when the wood is soaked with rainwater

As above when the wood is dry is ideal as will suck up the preserver.

this is the time , and I aim for late in the afternoon , then the wood soaks in the preserver without the heat of the sun drying it up , , not done sheds , but its when I do boat decks .

From observing the ex's husband with one of those, it meant he used 2-3 times as much liquid as I did with a brush.

I've just done my large shed with a paint roller[not the sponge ones the furry ones ] & took my garden gate off to do & replaced it after it dried,so the postman didn't catch himself on it I use genuine creosote 80% mixed with 20% used engine oil it dries & looks fantastic,,the gate was made 40 yrs ago from pallet wood & I bought the shed 50 yrs ago & it was second hand then & no rot in either of them,none of this "modern water based stuff "for me.

Re "the modern stuff", I have the impression that when you use it on something for the very first time, it's OK. The problem seems to be when you want to "refresh" it after a couple of years, when the second application doesn't seem to adhere very well. Anyone else found that?
I've been trying out Creocote; maybe not as good as Creosote, but easier to get in small quantities.

I've just done my large shed with a paint roller[not the sponge ones the furry ones ] & took my garden gate off to do & replaced it after it dried,so the postman didn't catch himself on it I use genuine creosote 80% mixed with 20% used engine oil it dries & looks fantastic,,the gate was made 40 yrs ago from pallet wood & I bought the shed 50 yrs ago & it was second hand then & no rot in either of them,none of this "modern water based stuff "for me.

Chatting to a mate yesterday he reckons he uses the same mix as you, and it lasts years. Not sure where you can buy real creosote nowadays though.

It's only supposed to be used by professionals and I think that means buying maybe 50 litres? It can be found at Sunday morning car boot sales in smaller quantities, though I wonder if you get real Creosote or maybe something like Creocote?

Just went out and started on the small shed. There's been light cloud cover all day, but as soon as I started painting the sun came out hard. I've finished the two sunward sides, the back sides never really sees it.



Tomorrow maybe a second coat, then start on the big shed.

If that's the Screwfix stuff, it certainly looks pretty good. I have an octagonal "Summerhouse" (it came with the house, the shape means it's poor for storage and it is currently the home of my grit blasting cabinet) it is something like 40 years old and is still in pretty good shape. I've just spent some time going around all the woodwork holding the panes of glass (6 x 10 inch ?) with Creocote. If that woodwork ever needed replacing, that would be very time-consuming. Of course, that was made when timber was an all together better commodity than it is now ! I just bought some 8' fence posts and sent some of them back; deep, long splits on every side and more knots than I could count.

same here my shed and fences are over 30 years old and still in good condition only get coated every 5 years and only been paying 27 quid a drum for it

Well I am a "professional" in my job covers a wide range of trades hehe I buy it in 5 gallon drums & it's the real stuff not Creocote has all the warnings etc on the drum from the "paint & thinners" man at the autojumbles you can get it from Smith & Allen in Darlo & as you say it's for professionals also in large quantities at Sam Turners farm supplies, of course if you go to B & Q Wickes etc they tell you it's banned, another urban myth.
