It's to cut aluminium chequer plate sheets. 1.5mm base thickness. 5754 grade. Lots of them.Anything suitable is expensive and needs to have a hard edge. O1 ground flat stock/toolsteel may be ideal but it generally is unhardened - you would need to quench and temper it, which at that length wont be easy, even if it were only the edge.
Mild steel can be deep case hardened by holding it at red heat for a long time and then quenched but large items are a challenge to get and keep hot..
Instead could tig weld a tool steel or HSS edge to it.
Whats the purpose, what are you intending to cut?
How much and how straight do you need the cuts ?It's to cut aluminium chequer plate sheets. 1.5mm base thickness. 5754 grade. Lots of them.
Where could I get a tool steel or HSS edge from? Thanks.
Aren't wrecking bars made of hardened steel of some sort? I could maybe cut and grind 2 down to make the 2 cutting blades and weld them onto some mild.
I think mild steel would be too soft, so carbon steel would be better right? How much does carbon steel cost? Where can I get some? I need to make a metal shear with 1 metre long blades. Thanks.
Thanks. What thickness would you recommend?Plenty of Hardox offcuts advertised on the bay of thieves.
