For benchwork I have a Weller soldering station, for anything else I use an Antex if mains available or a Portasol if not. Most important thing is not to use modern lead-free solder.

I bought one of the Lidl soldering stations a while back, it only cost me about £8 and works a treat but the tips keep working loose which drives me mad.
I had thought about putting a small screw in the side of the barrel to hold the tip more securely but I'm not sure if it might do any damage to anything?

My Dad used to heat his up on the gas cooker. Worked perfectly.

I have a large copper soldering iron similar great for soldering tanks up and retain the heat / I also have an instant soldering iron similar to the weller one. its American and more powerfull than the weller iron

I've also got the lidl unit, the tips loosen on mine also! Another problem is the lead - it has plastic insulation so is very stiff & always seems to be in the way. They should've used rubber flex. Other than that it's a good unit but I think I'll stick to my gas iron. Most of my work is on cars & cables get in the way when you're lying on your back under a dashboard!

i got my soldering iron from halfords, with the discount card it was a tenner

i use it for all my general usage unless its remote then i use my aldi gas powered iron, good iron but gets a bit too hot.
