Does "dual action" mean the same as random orbital, or somthing else?
(i know very little about this, as is evident, im sure!)
DA are random or fixed orbit and I think that's where the "Dual Action" term comes from.

uses 2.2kw as opposed to a couple of hundred watts
ok lets say 500w its still gonna use less then a 14 cfm compressor which will be running most of the time you are using the sander, i have both but use the electric one more, when you are using x amount of tools there will be a point when its cheaper to run all air tools where possible, caravan companies do this aswellThat is slightly misleading, any decent electric sander is going to use more than a couple of hundred watts and do that continuously. Yes a big compressor will use more but it won't run continuously.
For me it's not about the power usage, an air DA is a much smaller nicer to handle unit. If electric was better then body shops would use them but they don't.
I'm intrigued why you think electric is better?
Air DA are really good, cheap as chips, discs are cheap and the machine is smaller than the equivalent electric one.
14CFM will run a DA in home use perfectly.

When I did my beetle in the pic I did it all by hand inc. a lot of shaping of the roof as I filled a sunroof hole.I've got a 16x3 inchish long block, a 6 inch block and a few small bits of wood.Didn't really need powered sanders and not sure it would be as straight if I did.
cracking job you done there, absolutely loverly colour and finish
I have an electric erbauer 5 inch palm sander and am extremely happy with it. Variable speed and has had a fair amount of use with no issue. Considerably cheaper than the options shown so far.
I prefer the 5 inch as the discs have more holes so with a vacuum connected dust removal is better.
Discs are very important, cheap ones will clog on paint. Sia yellow are good and reasonably priced.
Edit: just had a look on screwfix and the "new" 49.99 one looks just like my old one, which was discontinued a couple of years ago. Will probably get one as a spare now.
Someone above recommended the 125mm version of that tool, at about 1/2 the price. You may consider that one, if you can go down to 5"?
