Best quality will cost you many thousands but you don't need to spend that sort of money to get a good machine.
What sort of stuff do you want to weld? Heavy, light? DIY or professional?
Be a little more specific and we can advise you further.
There's no point in me telling you to go out and buy a £5000 double-pulse synergic whatnot if all you want to do is weld up old cars and make the odd gate.

Ok , thought it was a simple question.
Single phase , multi-purpose , upto 10MM material , fabrication , repair and restoration , brazing facility would be nice if possible in the same set.

Repair and restoration of cars?
The problem here is that if you need a machine to weld 10mm then most likely it won't have a very low bottom setting suitable for thin bodywork.
You're looking at a machine of at least 300A, ideally bigger to get a decent duty cycle. The problem is finding one that has a suitably low lowest setting, most of the bigger industrial sets start at around 40A.
Don't make the mistake of buying a machine that claims it can 'weld up to 10mm' if you want to weld up to 10mm, you'll find yourself running it flat out which is not what it's designed for.
Go bigger so you've got power in reserve.
(I have first hand experience of that one.

Single phase will restrict you a little, by that I mean you wont be able to get a good quality Pulse mig.
We do a 230v 250 amp output mig, but its not Multi-Purpose as its Transformer based. It does however have Synergic lines pre-Installed for different materials. Take a look on the website for M-Pro
If you want Multi-Process, it will have to be an Inverter based unit, We (Lorch dont do any Single phase inverter Migs at present) but Kempii do the MinArc Migs.

Think you misunderstood about the TIG , I already have a Murex Transtig for my TIG work.
The repair restoration thing is everything from cars to bikes to old stationary engines. Not just bodywork though. I'm often into 8 & 10 mm for engine mount repairs and fabrication , and lots of stuff on old stationary engines is quite heavy.
Don't worry about the brazing I mentioned , I'm gonna do that with Gas.

I assumed tig because you said Multi-Purpose. That usually means MMA/TIG/MIG
I think the M-Pro 252 would be ideal as its a true 250 amp output, as it will weld thin stuff with a 0.6 or 0.8mm wire and then for the thicker stuff you can still get into spray arc with a 1.0mm wire. You will need atleast a 16 amp supply though.

Apologies , I meant multi-purpose work. The 16 amp supply is no problem.
Well , my TIG has stick on it but my skill with it is not very good !! Can very good quality welds with good appearance be achieved with stick ?
With practice, the sky is the limit. For example, see this thread, which is mostly about Arc, with a bit of TIG thrown in, but you'd be in a position to follow suit, if required, presumably:

For thick materials, I suggest there may also be a higher level of assurance on a sound, well-penetrated joint, with Arc.

Did The Mig's ever use rolls royce engines. We have gone from Hobby welds to post weld cleaning in a breath. I worry sometimes.
