Best primer/undercoat & paint for wrought iron gates?

What primer/undercoat & paint system do you find is the best for finishing non-galvanized gates?

Also what suppliers etc are best/brands.

Is this for private or commercial use? I used Aldi metal paint over an 'ordinary' primer/undercoat and it came out OK.

If it's for a customer where results/costs might be more critical, I don't know but I'm sure someone who does know will be along soon.

Total waste of money modern primers on ironwork unless you spend more than what it is for hot dip galvanising. Only time it's worth a jot is on stuff like estate railings that you can't transport.

I find Regal Paints corrosion resistant primer/Under coat and their Quick drying gloss enamel to be both good and hard wearing and economical in exterior exposed to the weather and elements conditions.

I'm a big fan of tractol primers & paints.

Interestingly I am working on a job for someone in crown paints management side. Low voc paint on primers are largely a waste of time as regards real protection but that's what all the manufacturers are stuck with now, we need to refurb a structural steel beam as part of his work and luckily he has a bit of old stuff left over
