Best prep for yellow zinc?

The better the surface finish before plating the better the final result, I'd give it a going over on the buffing wheel then degrrease.

Speaking from personal experience plating at home, done more than 200 items.

What type of buffing wheel do you mean please? A wire wheel on bench grinder or something else?

No, I use a sisal wheel fitted to the lathe.

I wouldn't blast something that will be handled regularly, it shows up scratches too easily.
