Hi there, any of you guys know where I can pick up a decent mig that is capable of welding ca bodys and reasonably thick steal for a project i have planned, my budget is £250 inc delivery.
hey sorry autocorrect add on for google chrome keeps changing my words i meant vehicle body panels (how it changed that i dont know) lol and i havnt started any projects yet but i would say a maxiumum of 0.5mm (thats thick to me XD)
I would think you would be best with a 180 amp welder if you want up to weld 5 mm properly. You might get away with a little less if you are doing not much more than tacking. I might add at 180 amps be prepared for the odd fuse to blow on a 13 amp supply. I use a Thermal Arc 180 on 1.6mm to 6mm with ease. I recently prices a replacement model and that was over £600+vat. You would probably be better go down the second hand welder route.
Agree with tradesman, however if it is a one off project then something like a Clarke 150 would do you, 5mm can be welded, sometimes with some edge prep.
The problem is you may get the bug and then find lot's more projects crop up and it's not advisable to be running your MIG flat out all the time.
My advice is save up a bit longer and get the right mig in the first place, nothing worse than 6 months down the line realising you have bought something that is nice but lacking in performance.
