best make of cordless drill

would be nice to have a hammer function and some slow speeds for holesaw work

cant decide between makita or metabo

heard something about metal gearboxes n hitachi supposed to be good

any ideas/suggestions welcomed

Im on Makita at the moment as my Dewalt had packed up and it was cheaper to get a Makita kit than a new battery for the Dewalt as i needed it there and then, now i have an angle grinder an a small rip saw to run off the battery

Li-ion battery so much better than the ni cads etc makita dewalt bosh and Hitatchi all worth a look just find who is doing the best deal and get the highest Ahr battery you can afford.

The 1.5Ah packs aren't an issue for me as I only use it in the work shop so I'm never far away from my 2nd battery on charge and I like the smaller set-up.

A friend of mine is a builder and he has just swapped all his rechargeable stuff over to Metabo from a mixture of De Walt and Makita. He is impressed with the quality and the warranty on them.

makita metabo dewalt or hitachi just check the spec on the torque and how many ah the battery is as all 3 do mickey mouse cheap versions, u get what u pay for

I've recently got a small makita with 3Ah 18v li-ion batteries....20 minute charge.
It seems to work very well and goes for a fair old time on a battery.

Very true have to compare on a like for like basis, the Dewalt above only has a 1.5Ah battery. Should be ok for 20 mins solid drilling concrete, the 1.8Ah last longer.
Metabo are under rated, spare batteries could be more costly than Bosch or Dewalt though. Becomes more cost effective if can use same batteries in other tools. Changed to Nano 2Ah over two years ago at £45 and £51 per battery plus charger.

Wouldnt dismiss AEG either.

Like my AEGs at the minute, + they interface with Miluwakee, run a couple of accessories off the same batteries, been through Dewalts, Panasonic and the earlier Makitas, all the batteries go eventually and you have to spin the coin to re-cell, buy a battery, or buy a whole new piece of kit. Its crazy when you can buy a whole kit cheaper than 2 new batteries, rip off. I think a lot depends as to how often you may use them, mine get quite hammered 5 days a week.So with due respect to the cheapies, they are no good to me.

seems to be between them to

Mines just coming up to 3 year old, a 14.4 and an 18V, + torch and jigsaw, used in a wood working / building maintenance environment, my Son has a 14.4 same age but his is a once in a blue moon type of use, they were on promotion for the Xmas and too good a deal at the time to say no.. Later bought 2 18v batteries as they too were on offer, I didnt need them but they too were too cheap to say no, also got a Miluwakee 14 and 18 charger that fit

what sort of abuse are you giving it ? matabo looks impressive, i was impressed with the charge time of the makita lsx batteries and the small ripsaw for floor lifting , for me the higher speed of the makita over the higher torque of others id used were for me as im mostly spinning smaller diamond tile cutting cores(faster the better) as well as plasterboard and cement board screwing. only thing that lets the small cheapo combi drill down is putting 10mm holes in concrete floors for fisher pan fixings the old DeWalt was better at the brutal stuff.

makita batteries "fail" if they are stored in a low state of charge.

it all comes from China but the German kit always seems to have better quality than others yank stuff just feels like its stuck in the 50s Jap is a mixed bag.
