best insulating tape ?

That was going to be my point - used for everything except insulating? It's a 'bodge' if its ever seen wrapped round a live conductor, or half a roll dogged round some shonky terminal blocks in a ceiling void.

i can never understand why they wrap a load of tape round connector blocks in light fittings it serves no purpose as theres no moisture there and a dry enclosed enviroment

Because it hides the shoddy terminations

These horrible Ikea ceiling lights are favourites - no room to terminate three cables in so they jamb them in a terminal block and shove them up in the ceiling void with lashings of insulation tape with one wire coming out into the light fitting.

.....Or strip out the light fitting and then reconnect all the reds/browns and blacks/blues together and nothing works any more

its a strange one regulations state all cables should be double insulated outside of switches sockets etc and no inner cores showing on a test its frowned upon if any are .but nothing is ever said about strip connectors behind light fittings that are exposed most light fittings sold arent designed for loop in loop out wiring there all continental for a single cable

In ours the lighting ring is run round the switches with a single cable to each light. Nice and easy to change them. Hager switches have a neutral terminal in the back to save having to put a terminal block in the back box to connect them together.

There was loads of moisture about when I plastered a connector block into a wall........ after getting the feeling back in my arm the newly wrapped connector block was successfully plastered into the wall.Now all been removed, done when I was younger and possibly more stupid.

I still have a good stock of Scotch tape, never had a problem with it, Self amalgamating for lots of jobs, Not just electrical.

tut tut conector blocks not to be used buried in walls . must be crimped connectors a permanent joint in an enclosure

the non conductive type? sorry had to get that out of my system
i use 3m and its really good

Same as most said, 3M 33 or 88, personally I prefer the 88, it used to be one of the few tapes actually approved for HV underground cable repair, don't know if that's still the case.
