Best grinding disc for heavy weld beads

As above, not my beads lol, but been asked to remove them, multi pass weld on a overhead beams that have had plates removed, roughly 8" long by 1.5" wide and a inch deep.
Can't use plasma as it will destroy dpc

On the same theme, maybe a portable bandsaw or a reciprocating saw could reduce the bulk of them.

If they are close enough to the edge and there is enough headroom, clamp a piece of plywood vertically on the beam and run one of these along it so the blade cuts nearly flush with the bottom flange:

How does a serious die grinder compare with an abrasive disk?

I've got some 180mm ceramic flap discs that I use for refacing anvils that would do that job relatively easily

I find they work better than grinding disks and are a lot safer.
Also the B+D powerfile with a quality coarse belt works surprisingly well. Especially when access is tricky.

I'd certainly rate the cubitron as well but my take on the op's post suggests he needs to remove 1.5" x 1" of weld in 8" lengths.
That's a fair old lump, ideally if, like previously suggested, you could get a bandsaw or something to take the majority off then a cubitron would be ideal for finishing but I don't think they have got the removal rate to do the whole job. Especially if it's overhead.

Even taking most of it off with a cheap cutting disc first would be considerably quicker than an expensive grinding disc.

Might even be quicker to cut down from the base on both sides into a shallow vee and then refill with weld

If these welds are in such a position that gravity can help, I find a heavy cup wheel or "rock"
works good, I've had sparks coming off that are actually small C curled chips, when using a heavy air powered (3 hp) grinder.
I also like the old saucer wheels, no need to lift up the back of the grinder all the time.

Probably get them cheaper if you shop around. Might be worth seeing if you can get hold of a 3m rep. They do a vast range of discs and would probably be able to advise the one which will be best suited.

That's a lot of material. I'd be trying to chop out as much as possible with as big a thing that is available/fits the space and the thinnest disc that fits it.

For me, that'd be a 9" grinder with 2mm disc. Tidied with whatever abrasive works.
