best gas

whats the best gas for a newbie to start with. just got myself a 160 mig so going to have a play at the weekend.using the disposable at the moment as i don,t think i,ll get the use out of a large bottle.

Hi there, I use a 95% Argon, 5% Co2 mix, which if great for welding thin vehicle bodywork.

Pub gas, ie Co2 is ok and can be cheap to get if you know anyone, as W4yne mentions the 95/5 is the best though for car work, for heavier steel at full amps 80/20 is better.

It all depends on how much you intend to weld, compared to what supplier you have locally, try and find the independant suppliers, usually much cheaper than BOC.

I have a large bottle of 95/5, £35 a year rent and £33 to refill, no silly collection charge when refilling as BOC does.

theres a bloke advertising on eblag, he does 95/5 cougar, and 93/7 ferramax in rent free bottles which he'll sell you and he's not expensive.

Note it is 5% CO2 and 2% O2 and 93% argon. Cougar, Argosheld light, Ferromax and most of the others are 5% CO2 are near the same mix.

95/5 Ar/CO2 will produce welds that are a bit tall.
