I just use MS Security essentials and don't open any attachments that I am not 100% sure about, that includes attachments from friends, that's no guarantee its safe

I'm a big fan of Malwarebytes (free version) as an extra precaution. It quite often finds stuff that gets overlooked by a traditional antivirus ...and it's always managed to remove it!
MS Essentials running at all times and Malwarebytes free version updated and run once a week.
Only ever had one major virus attack, tried everything and was fighting a losing battle until mate came with Malwarebytes, that sorted it, hence why I always have it handy.
Malrwarebytes... for what it offers, I consider a paid version free..., life time update is nice and the program is so fast working in the background.. not like the free AVAST that I used to have.
The very bad thing about free anti-virus software is that once you install it, they treat your computer as it was theirs. They are so intrusive making their presence almost all the time... They take your computer for a big commercial platform and at the same time.....you for an idiot (Avast for example did not allow me to uninstall - perhaps assuming I am retarted that I wanted to). And if they could only do half of what you think they should do judging by their looks - attractive and colourful like McDonalds bag but unfortunetly crap inside...
Malware is nothing like that again, it is very old fashioned in this area, all the options are there but at the same time it is so modest, not getting in the way, not even merely mentioning that you have it.... but does its job so well.... even the trial version will not make any of these announcements of being the best out of the market.. it just sits there quietly but sooner or later you will know it is the best you can get....
I have run AVG plus Malwarebytes for several years, both the paid for versions . Neither are intrusive and crossed fingers ..........!
Just note that Malwarebytes is not an anti virus prog as such so it's advisable to run it with whatever is your choice of AV prog . However it does have the feature of removing Potentially Unwanted Programmes such as unwanted toolbars etc that try to sneak in on the back of something legitimate - useful imo.
The bad thing about running free software is you likely don't have a full security suite from one provider. So you end up running several different manufacturers to get a full suite. Which isn't ideal.
Do you actually need to use windows ? If all you do is web browsing, email, word processing, etc etc then why not consider Linux ? as long as your not a pc gamer you'll probably be fine without windows.
I write code (basic, pascal,C++), play games, use the internet, edit photos etc etc, most stuff that you can do on windows you can do for free on Linux and almost all the file formats are interchangeable.
I've been windows free now for over a decade, and to tell you the truth I don't miss it at all.
My computers don't just get slower and slower all by themselves, no viruses, no malware, no blue-screens-of-death, very few reboots, my last reboot for my laptop was over 2 months ago, my HTPC/server 10 days and that is only because we had a power cut.
If you can go without windows, believe me you won't miss it one bit.
