by cross vice i assume you mean the type of vice with x and y adjustment for a drill press?
firstly what are you planning on using it for? they are for the most part pretty in accurate and cheaply made. you may be better off getting a co-ordinate table and a standard vice but like i say it depends on what you need it for
Had a budget vice from J+L at work a few years ago,had adjustable gibs, but the backlash was terrible, was only £30 ish ,but needed locking screws to be useful....Wouldn't even consider one for "light milling " on a pillar drill, unless they have changed
great idea poorly executed,in our case at least ,I hope the OP gets better feedback on some others as i might still be interested for home ,but only if the backlash is ok etc .....
Thanks guys, I just would like a decent quality cross vice, without any backlash, just a precision tool. There must be some available, the ones that I have seen had more slap than my user namesake.
I don't think such a thing exists or is at least pretty rare i.e. there's not much point in bolting such a thing to the table of a mill and for use on a drill press... limited travel means less useful than a compound x-y table for locating holes to be drilled
The only thing i know of other than the usual suspects that are similar/the same as the J&L 'value' line is this SOBA compound slide vice and googling 'soba indian backlash' will probably put you off if the price already hasn't
I would have thought that a good quality one would be available, but with all your comments with similar experiences to my own regarding poor quality it looks like a compound table is my only option. Any thoughts on Vertex brand.
Cheers
