Best combination spanners...

I'm a maintenance fitter in a paper mill and own all sorts ,for diy the halfords pro kit is good value ,their opening hours take some beating when you are in a jam as well...

I have some faithfuls,an old elora 19mm offset combination is always in my tool rool,but facom spanners and screwdrivers are a favourite,britool are common at work although not as nice as old britool never had one fail,and I still have king dick from my apprenticeship...

I've only ever broken spanners by abusing them ,either extending using pipe or looped spanners or beating with a mallet ,if something is really tight I go for a socket and breaker bar when i can ....choose your weapon carefully and push with an open hand ,so you don't ever punch things if anything splits or breaks ....it helps to consider where will my hand hit if this job goes badly

What I find now is I can't relegate work spanners to home ,in industry we use 10,13,17,19,24 and so on ,car and bike manufacturers use 12,14,15,16,and 18,21.....

Show off! can you still use it to facom?, at least it won't snap on use, have you been polishing it? coz thats why you've ended up with a brit tool, anyway tengs arnt what they used to be, and the wife started using mack's , but even that's ended up with a blue point now!

Snap on are no better than some others [as mentioned] at far less price IMO.
A matter of paying for the name.

ive used many snap on spanners and find the older ones are more comfortable as the newer stuff has square edges i was looking for a new set of spanners mid last year i went onto the snap on van held all the newst spanners they had and they were all sqaure edged i ended up buying a set of bluepoint ones which are nicelt radiused and comfortable when pushing or pulling hard on them think they where £94 7-19mm

Our fitters at work have trialed Kennedy as the Cromwells Rep. was singing their praises, they didn't like them so went back to Britool if I remember correctly.
I like Gedore but have recently got a few extra Halfrauds pro combi's and they seem fine. Get a Halfrauds trade card before you buy and they are even cheaper!

Stahlwille all the way for me, they are very pricey though but cannot fault them. I use Teng (like), Britool (nice finish on them), gedore (all big stuff 36mm - 80mm and also very good flogging spanners), bahco (they make the best ajustables... My tradesman as an apprentice would not be impressed with the use of a good old shifter)

bahco, is good quality stuff, and siegen spanners are good and cheap and look nice being polished

I have a set of open end Stahlwille spanners bought when I was serving my time,thats over 52 years ago and they are still going strong, quite light but even after all those years no jaws sprung open, They are living up to their Stahlwille motto "Stronger than any bolt"

Facom Spanners

Facom spanners are the dogs dangly bits on sale at the moment have a look at the pro tool flyer on the britool expert website

Facom are great spanners,but i have a few where the plating is lifting ,and whilst I like them in my carry around kit for the factory ,they are much shorter standard length than say a britool....I really like their screwdrivers too....

I've just been indulging in a set of Taskmaster combos - there was a rash of Snap-On copiers appeared on the market when the S-O patents ran out in the early 80s and some were better than others. Taskmaster were some of the better copies and all the ones I bought then have never given me an ounce of trouble, so for years I've meant to fill in the gaps with more Taskmaster and not pay S-O prices. Apart from that, the S-O kit is a magpie magnet.
There's a lot of NOS Taskmaster around at the moment, can be picked up very cheaply. Some of the ones I've acquired recently look as if they were flood-damaged (slight staining, easily cleaned off) stock and they came up like new.
Only got a few more to go now...

I have some Brittool (old) Snap-on and Halfords pro, i havent managed to break any yet and the jaws dont open too easily (not combi), but the halfords are a little thin and without gloves on are not the most comfortable when you are hanging off them. The old Brittool are my favorite.

If they're plated, it's never flaked and I'm not about to destroy one to analyse it. I'm leary of plated chrome, since I got a wedge of it under a fingernail from a not-cheap spanner a while ago. These might be polished or plated, I don't care, as long as they don't bend or break and so far, in 25+ years of using the brand, none of them have ever done so.

I have both snapon and very old draper in my box.

The draper look like the hi torq ones they currently do. They would have been made by some other company and just branded draper.

Anyhow, I'm no professional user of spanners and, for me, there's not a lot of difference in general use.

I recon the draper are about 18 years old. One day I'll do a side by side with the current hi torque ones. The handles are all smooth, rounded, like the snapon.
