The best car in the world, I bought in 1994 2 years old with 20,000 miles, its been laid up for a few years but the final tally on the miles was just under 400,000 from the original 3.0 24V petrol engine and manual gearbox, It ate tyres, 2 head gaskets and the usual wear and tear stuff but it only ever broke down twice for stupid little things
Just put 20ltrs of juice in, a battery and it drove out of the barn to help with the hay collecting

The Defender - nothing, but I got peed off with a tourist in the Highlands when towing Dad's Argocat back and decided the 300Tdi could do with a bit of a tune up. So I decided to tune it by throwing a 250+hp V8 in there instead.

In actual fact it was destined for the Sandringham 6x6 as a cheaper and better alternative to a Rover V8 but then a mate offered me an SL35Ti that's dropped straight in for a ridiculous bargain so rather than waste the 1UZ it's going in the 110. Although I'm now thinking that once I've got it running the Sandringham will feel left out with only 4 cylinders (the Defender will have a V8, the L322 is a V8) so I might look at a V8 for that one

maybe one of my better choices 2000 Skoda octavia estate 1.9tdi. 70mpg on a motorway run!

Owned for 4 years, currently 112k miles, huge boot

Bought as spares or repairs on evil bay because it was “hard to start” it was a glow plug relay £11!

Paid £300 for it! even the climate control works

“Could do” with a service, will need a battery and glow plugs before winter sets in.

Lot of time for skodas that's a total bargain, barely run in.

I have bought cheap stop gap cars a couple of time that went on provide service for a long time.

I like cars but I've been someone who yearns for something new, I've never had a company car even though for most of my working life I've been entitled to one.

There is nothing better than working out that a car has only cost you about £5 a week when you have friends paying 3 times that every day.

I've always found the best way to run cheap cars is not to be blinkered, don't narrow the field to a particular vehicle or specific spec, you have to look at everything at face value. When you go and look at £250 car you don't spend 30mins going through the service history. I've been with a mate to buy a really cheap car and he started digging around looking for engine numbers etc. I nearly punched him in the face, it's £200 lets load it on the trailer!!

I got a Capri for £265 20 odd years ago and it was one of the best cars I've ever had for burning around! I think I sold it for £600 18 months later!

It’s all VW/ Audi underneath, Been told The engine is highly tuneable if I wanted it remapped etc.

someone has also commented it can be run on used veg oil!

If its a PD engined TDI I wouldn't recommend veg oil.

I used to like the Lampredi 2.0 litre engine and they were plentiful in scrapyards in Fiats.

Quickest way to strip a Fiat: stand legs slightly apart with a comfortable posture, flex your knees to ensure movement, grab the guttering and shake violently for 2 minutes and you will be left with a pile of mechanicals and a pile of rust.

Costs to tune, about that of an A series BMC and much more power.

Many moons ago I helped a friend coax an older twincam 124 engine/gearbox into a mk1 Escort, fantastic little engine that went a lot better than the HP figures would suggest. There weren`t many cars back then that would stay with it.

Nope, PD Tdi introduced 1999, might not have been fitted to Octavia as early as that?
Anyway, PD or not it sounds like a bargain motor
