under 300 you will be looking at a MMA welder with lift/scratch tig if you want to buy new...i doubt you would get a HF AC/DC welder for under 300 new.
if you are looking for second hand then there may be a few units on here that may fall within your budget but you need to post a few more times to be able to see the sales section.
Also, does your 300 budget include paying for a mask, gloves, other PPE that might be needed, Argon for TIG welding with, Rods etc.? if you need all that gear out of the 300 as well then you may struggle to find something, but if the 300 is just for the welder then you should be able to find something to start with

just noticed i didnt mention that for 300 you will probably only get a DC machine anyway, so welding ali is out

Aluminium welding will be difficult for any machine under £300, be it tig, mig or stick.
I think it'd be a good idea to stick with DC only [mild steel, stainless steel, no aluminium] you'll get an alright set for around £300, not amazing but not terrible, but it'll have to be secondhand.. not much in the way of new machines for £300. £430 is the cheapest set I know.

No the 300 would be just for the welder, im 2 and a half years into my apprenticeship and have been thinking about getting a welder to do a few jobs for myself and friends outside of work and to also practice some mma as i only do tig in work, i could spend more than 300 but i'd also need to buy some tools as well so dont want to go overboard with it, any recommendations on what set?

if you just fancy an MMA unit that will do a bit of lift tig then i would highly recommend the Parweld XTi160 and the accompanying tig torch to go with it...think the welder is about 180 from weldequip (link at the top of the page) and the torch with gas valve and regulator is about 80 quid, that just leaves gas to buy as you use it.

ive got one and its a very good MMA welder, the last one i had was very smooth ont he tig side of it too but obviously only Lift arc

The other day I was watching a fronius transtig 2000 on ebay, starting bid was £440 but noone bid on it. It's fairly old but looked immaculate. I was going to offer £350 but did one last search to see what else I could get for that money and welding supplies direct were selling an ewm pico 162 with leads for £350 inc p+p. Just looked and they've still got some. Fronius would be a good second hand buy i think, and i'm sure you can't do any better than the ewm brand new for that sort of money!

The Fronius would of been a dedicated tig unit with hf start pre and post flow etc etc I think I saw it. I used to have the magicwave 2000. Simply super units.
£350 for a little pico ain't bad.
I'd chose the Fronius mind if either were up at the same price simply for its true tig features. The ewm will be lift arc in snap out tig which isn't as nice.
Also imo Fronius have the edge even 20 year old ones.
To the op £300 doesn't buy acdc tig units. It barely buys DC tig units but it definitely buys mma inverters with lift arc tig. You won't be welding aluminium with a tig unless you realistically throw a grand at the kit.
