Best basecoat metallic for first metallic overall paintjob

I've painted quite a few old cars over the years but I have some how managed to avoid painting a metallic. I'd like opinions on the best basecoat for a fairly dark graphite silver for a newbie to spray to avoid mottling and striping. I'm spraying air dry in a garage so was thinking Lechler BSB, max meyer, ??? colour match isn't Cristal as the whole car is being painted in an old colour. Ideally, I don't want to pay glasurit money but if it means not doing it twice because it's easier to use I would think about a more expensive brand. Clear wise I would prefer something compatible that will sand and polish well and hold up for years on a garaged care. Any help appreciated, Thanks.

You should be fine with any main brand. I've used Mipa, HMG and Pro-spray and there wasn't really any noticeable difference between them. Technique and gun setup makes far more difference.

As to the clear, it depends on if you want to spray 2k or not. If you are limited to 1k then the only clear worth using in my opinion is U-pol Acrylic Smart Clear S2085.

2k Clear only. I have a Hobby air system for my airfed mask setup so no issues.

I like the Lechlar basecoat, it doesn't lose it's colour like a lot of the cheaper brands do, Bristol motors have just had a Lechlar paint scheme installed so it can't be bad, well priced too.
Clears I like the Lechlar acrifan 2000 or Max Meyer Maxiclear , both sensible money for a quality product, also if you can find it at the right price ICI nexa is great stuff.

How much should I be paying for 5 litres of lechler BSB mixed? Paints4u will send it for £266 but that seems steep.

I pay £30-40 a litre so £150-200

I don't think so. I had my epoxy from paints 4u mixed to a RAL grey. £200 sounds more like what I thought it would be. I'll see what I can get down the road for solvent but they seem to be more waterbased now and I think they are now ppg so I might get max meyer.

PPG and Max Meyer are the same company aren't they ?

Yes max meyer is one of their cheaper ones.
