Ive never really understood what they aid in, obviously they allow a larger volume of air to be stored.. is that all they do, would i benifit from one using a compressor for shotblasting, air sanding, grinding and general mechanics work, rather than buying a bigger compressor as im only on single phase eleccy id prefer to buy a smaller cheaper one if i can.. thoughts comments and help appriciated

Compressors are measured in CFM but when I was looking for one the compressor shop told me to look for the FAD (free air delivery) figure which is nominally about 2/3 of the CFM figure. I bought a 3hp SIP which I've had for ages and if I am using my spraygun running at 40psi the compressor can kick in when it reaches it's lower pressure and replenish the tank without me waiting for it to refill. Tools like pot blasters need a compressor like the ones used on roadworks running on a big diesel engine.
