Bench Vice

Well is basically for some model work.I am an architect and designer having a small work shop doing models and small scale stuff.

I do know that you suggest Record Vice and just record and there should be a reason for that but I found this clarke Vice

With a Malleable iron base that I assume is better than a cast iron one!
It is really in good price .

It only mentions the base being malleable iron. That likely means the lower turntable. Malleable iron is softer than cast, (can't remember offhand if they just heat treat cast to turn it into malleable?), so the strength and rigidity, (and conversely fragility), is in cast iron, not malleable.

Btw, if you believe in good tools, the elder are generally better, where vices are concerned. A good condition second hand English built vice will be far better quality than the Asian made stuff.

Have used one of those Clarke vice,s at a mates and found the swivel base to be useless, it will not lock up tight enough and turns with a decent pull.

Not necessarily just Record. It's merely that they are the only one, technically, still producing. If you're not averse to the second hand gear, original Record, Parkinson, Woden, Fortis etc. are all good bits of old quality kit.

Just a note on materials, the ultimate material for a vice is forged steel but not many are made from that, one is the Heuer I linked to in my first reply. Next best material is SG ductile cast iron, the heaviest Record's use that, then followed by grey cast iron which the other vices in the Record range are made from. Grey iron can vary greatly in quality and this is where the problem can be with cheaper imported vices, they typically use poor quality material. Thing is, you can't tell from just looking at it !
However, if you are only going to use it for light, model making type work then it probably will never be an issue. Premature wear of poor quality screw and nut may be the first sign of quality problems with a cheap import, rather than breakage.

If you can find one for sensible money I would rescommend a Swinden, they are a fantastic vice, built in pipe jaws, swivel in the vertical plane, used by the army, so horrendously strong, been going for 70+ years IIRC. Mine is pre 1950, and still going strong. The only downside is if you want a new one, a 6" one is about £1150 +vat. Otherwise, an older Record 23 is good, I have one of those on the bench as well. They go for beans on ebay because they are collect only almost every time.

I can vouch for the Swinden too, I'm lucky enough to have a 4" version, they are the Terminator of vices !!

The price was an issue at that time and still it is!
I speak with a friend of me in Germany and he is able to supply me this Vice in a really good price.
I will have to wait a bit as he will be in Uk in a month time, but this is not really a problem for me.

Tigler and Boys is this Vice so good in terms of quality ?
Can you compare with the record and swinden that you suggest?

The spec on that Heuer vice is excellent, the principle feature is that it is made from forged steel, practically there is no better material for a vice. The other technical aspects are also unique and well thought out. The only aspect of consideration is whether to go for the replaceable jaw version, which would be my choice.
Record are still excellent vices though but at the price, the Heuer is incomparable, considering new prices, a 4" Record of comparable duty would be hundreds of pounds new. Of course you could buy a used Record for a fraction of that.
The Swinden is the ultimate though, as it has completely sealed working parts, has the revolving head and is virtually indestructible, as endorsed by the British Army ! Costs a fortune though !

Even a second hand cost something like £350 in Ebay!
It looks really well made so definitely worth its money !
I will have to speak to my friend again about the Heuer and see from there. Not want him to carry a heavy thing in his luggage .He is a nice Guy,not like to use his kindness!

I understand about your friend, I was sort of joking but hoping at the same time !
For you it's a win win situation, the Heuer is an excellent option for buying new but the Record is not a loser if you choose to buy used !!

Boys my friend cannot supply the Heuer with the replaceable turnable jaw that Tigler loves .I am is out of the list!

Options are :

1.Heuer Original
2.Heuer compact
3.York 125 Standard T
4.York 125 Lux T
5.Irwin Record Pro Entry Cast Iron 100mm 4" Bench Vice

Not happy with the Heuer Original as you cannot change the jaw.Jaws is something that after some years you have to change so not sure about that.
Not know about the Heuer Compact.Any good?

York Vices not know if you know about them and if it is any near to record and Heuer.It is Czech brand and my friend said it is a respectable brand.
We have said about record so it is in the list as a cheap and good vise.

What will be your 1st second and 3rd option Guys

Cheese eh?Well cannot ignore the good info that some people like tigler have given to me! I really appreciate the time he has spend and the effort !The problem is that many vices that look that made from steel actually made from cheese pete23.Recently I saw a clarke vise that I thought it was good to come in to pieces.Unfortunately the quality has been dropped down extremely the last years and difficult to trust the brands.
I am sure the vises I have in the list are all of them good there small issues like the fact that the Heuer Original cannot change the jaws.
