bench grinder

Has anyone bought/got one of these,they any good,seems rather cheap for a 400w motor,i do remember Wolf use to make good power drills once.

You aren't serious surely. Wolf became an importer of Chinese products for Aldi and went bust earlier in the year. The leftovers are mostly bankrupt stock.

Is that because of poor performance, or that it's basically a flawed machine with no parts availability?

Wouldn't it be OK for 'home' workshop use?

like most other things now nothings made in england a good wolf grinder would have cost about £100 i prefer good secondhand ones bought for about 30 quid.which get absolutly hammered the ones on e bay look quite good for general; purpose use and will probs give many years service

wolf grinders

8" grinders are usually dearer and the bigger motor is a bonus. It is probably exactly the same grinder as sold by Sealey and Clarke made in the same factory in China and painted a different colour. 8" stones are standard and widely available and should be the only parts you need for a long time.

Motor body is smaller than the sealey version, sealey version is 560w. Similar motor wattage to there 6 inch version. you get what you pay for

For thirty quid it's worth a punt; if you don't expect too much from it then you won't be disappointed if it does go wrong.

Motor body looks a bit small compaired to the wheel size. Looks like they've fitted 8" wheels and guards to a 6" body.

I would give that a wide swerve and go for something like this rexon for a £30 bench grinder. Yes it's 6" but i'll eat my hat if that wolf has more torque/is better balanced than the smaller rexon

As said an old second hand wolf or other English made grinder is in a different league (torque, balance, table/tool rest) if you can find one for sensible money

A decent bench grinder is worth spending a few quid on, especially if you intend to use it for sharpening lathe tools, drills etc. I have a Hitachi 8" for this purpose, not sure of the wattage but is a quality well made professional tool with enough grunt for the job. I also have a clarke 6" bench grinder, which in comparison is absolute junk, totally useless for sharpening tools as it doesn't have anywhere near enough power, as a dedicated tungsten grinder, it's perfect.

Looks exactly the same as the one I bought from Axminster tools about three years ago. Mines labelled as a `perform', but I don't think they sell it anymore. Seem to remember it was about £40 and about the cheapest 8 inch grinder around at the time. I think for £30 you can't go far wrong for home use. Mine tends to get used more with a wire wheel for removing rust than actually grinding.

I didn't know wolf had gone bust Malcolm, or that they went down the ****** route,I believed that they were part of kango group,I bought my first offhand bench grinder for sharpening drill bits/lathe tools,cold chisels etc about 38yrs ago it was a 6'' wolf & it cost me about £24 so£30 in todays money isn't too bad,as a footnote I still have it with a ''reliance'' drill grinding jig fitted to it, I'm a gr8 believer in wolf tools, not so struck on crap & decker though unless it's industrial.

I have a Wolf drill here, single speed, nearly 30 years old. Definitely a quality drill with shocking torque. Wrist breaker. It is relentless.

Shame to hear they went down.

Steer clear of cheap grinders!!! Place I used to work at wouldnt buy a decent one and ended up buying one similair to that. It lasted 3 weeks being used once or twice a day before one of the supplied wheels popped! The next one you couldn't even use out of the box, the shafts were slightly undersize and I could not get a wheel to spin without so much vibration I thought the walls were going to collapse. We ended up going through 4 of them at £45 a pop in 6 months. Spend as much as you can possibly afford when it comes to stuff like this, you really really don't want to mess with something spinning at that high an RPM when it breaks

I think thats true of all tools, cheap one are nothing but trouble generally. I used to have a massive beef with people trying to buy cheap welding equipment when i first joined the forum. It took me a while to realise that may on this forum use things for the occasional use and thus it wasn't really economical for them to spend vast sums of money on a single tool, and that fact that its cold in winter and the more we buy from the Chinese the more global warming occurs thus warmer winters lol. The advice now is go for the best you can afford.

it should be fine for proper use not abuse :laughing:

i have one simlar size for tool sharpening and a larger one that i pull the sh ,.,.,,.t out of with coarse wheel and a green stone for sharpening carbide tools and large masonary drills

Well shop around then!. Didn't put that link up because of price it was just the first hit from googling Rexon bench grinder. Bought one years ago as a cheap/light duty grinder and was pleasantly suprised at the quality for the price. Still going strong but only really used for tungsten sharpening these days
