Bench Drill

Hi guys. Stuck with new toy. Got myself a Progress No1 bench drill. Has a No34 Jacobs chuck fitted that seems wrong for machine. Chuck is a screw in type but pushed into taper on quill. Not running true and cannot remove to swap for a correct one. Believe it should be a 1mt. Any ideas on how to remove?
Also only got 4 pulleys at rear instead of 5 but will sort that at later date.

Taper drift. Push a piece of tapered steel into the slot and give it a belt with a hammer. The chuck will just drop off.

Hi Julian. Cannot do that because chuck does not reach slot. Seems to be wrong chuck incorrectly fitted. Have tried tapping it with copper hammer and block of wood but it did not budge. Don't want to go to mad on it and end up breaking it. Starting to think will have to strip it down and try on bench. Pain in the ass as to much on at moment.

I don't think you'll gain anything by stripping down.

Use a slide hammer - slide something heavy onto a long bolt and grip the bolt in the chuck, slide the weight up the bolt and ram it down onto the bolt head.

Bolt a vice to the table, wind the chuck down and hold it in the vice and then try to raise the chuck - you may have to tap the spider wheel, but don't go mad!

Never thought of slide hammer. Will have to try that later. Will be able to turn head sideways to give me more room/depth. Hopefully will work

Yes, got PM thanks have replied. Internet messing me around at moment. That or modem. Keeps knocking me off, then I have to log back in to everything. Have rebooted modem so hopefully that has sorted that!

slide a largish open ended spanner over the chuck get someone to hold up the quill and give the spanner a good belt down over with a hammer as close to the chuck as possible that will give it a strait push . if u do get it out buy a no1mt reamer and clean the taper out

Make a fine taper + a spacer that just fits through slot Then HIT it + a little wont hurts
Would have thought there was enough chuck shaft protruding into slot to move it, round top edge of tapered drift it helps it slide & produces more push.
