bench drill?

got one of them titan bench drill.
work ok accept the pully's are next to useless.
motors is ok and its ok for what I need.
why do you need 12 speeds or 16?
shirly 3 would be enough.
either buy a new one but alas all got loadsa speeds I just need 2 or 3.
any suggestions.ok change the pullys but I rather buy a good drill than spend money on that ****** make.

Must be the first person who ever complained about a machine tool having too many speeds! It's usually there's not enough... or a MIG set not having enough power steps... or a secretary not having big enough... er... heels.

Hello John,

I don't know about you, but I use my cheap Clarke pillar drill with drills from 1\16" to 3" hole saws and the ranges in between, on materials from plastic, aluminum and stainless steel, so I'm glad of the multiple speeds. Your soultion is obvious, just use the speeds you want?

Maybe its as simple as tensioning the pulley belt
or change the belt ---stretched
common sense isn't compulsory theses days

Aluminium pullies can wear so the belt bottoms in the vee so you don't get enough grip even though the belt is tight. Slipping will accelerate the wear.

You get lots of different speeds because...
1. different materials have different characteristics and so are best cut at different speeds. Cutting speeds and feeds... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speeds_and_feeds#Cutting_speed
2. The diameter of the drill (or milling cutter, or workpiece when turning something in a lathe) effects the rpm i.e. a larger diameter drill needs to turn at lower rpm than a small diameter drill to get a given cutting speed

If speeds are too high then (at the least) cutting tool life suffers, common example would be speed too high when drilling stainless... drill doesn't cut properly but instead rubs (friction + heat) = one blunt drill bit and (at best) a manky hole, possibly a work hardened mess that'll now trash a fresh drill bit even more easily

To avoid having to calculate spindle rpm each time there are handy little things known as 'cutting speed charts'. Several threads on the topic where charts have been posted and google will provide too

I think it's, partly, a negative review of the Titan Bench Drill johnakay has got, and also, he's asking for recommendations, for a bench drill, from a better manufacturer with only 2 or 3 speeds.

I'd just like to say that; I did have to get absolutely "off my face", on a 3 day bender, to decipher that. I did it entirely for the sake of the forum, and, as a good example to other members, to go that extra mile...

Unfortunately, johnakay, most of the cheaper drill machines are roughly the same when it comes to speeds (most are wholly unsuitable for metalwork & prolonging cutter tool life).

Ahh, if that's the case then something like this startrite will be much better made than a new cheap clarke or the like. Speeds will go from not quite slow enough (with big gaps in the range) upto probably too fast but at least the whole thing won't bend in use and (unless it's been abused) the chuck will be concentric and not keep falling out. Plenty of other brands (elliot, meddings, fobco etc) to keep an eye out for but many are often 3 phase

yes that is the problem slipping like me aunt fanny thingy
no how tight it still slip and it has new belts.
also the chuck etc falls out.
ah well never mind.

My titan slipped the first time I tried to drill a hole.

You tension the belt by moving the motor back on a couple of bolts i think.

I havent tried to tension it for ages i just swear at it when it slips then it seems to stop for a while.

I suppose I should have a proper look at it but then it will just make me spend mpney on new belts or pulleys or something then I will end up buying one off of ebay. hmmm
