You could buy one and modify it so at least your not making from scratch. Not difficult to swap to a more powerful motor and extend the length etc.

But where's the fun in that? Much more fun to turn the air blue as you make it yourself

I made one from wood, I lack the ability work with metals aside from the simplest ways:

Had a Vanco and thought about modifying it, but get the feeling that the only things I would have been able to use is the wheels (possibly) and everything else would have needed to be changed. Got an old 100mm RJH linisher, and while thats not ideal when I get it sorted much better than what I have currently (nothing!).

One you posted earlier looks easy enough to make, but wheels look flat, and not sure what stops belts coming off one side or another? If flat ones work thats fine though, as the barrel ones seem very costly?

From my research (which isn't a lot yet) you best off with ones with little crowns, but seen a few out there made out of scaffold tube where the centre has been machined so I'll probably give that ago as I've got a few bits

I agree and there is fun and satisfaction in building your own kit from scratch but Chris would be looking for a business asset I'd imagine and in a lot of cases there simply isn't the time. Gizmo bought a cheap one and modded it into something much more usable.

Thanks, it does work well for it's intended purpose, grinding bevels on chisels and such. Mostly a sharpening machine rather than stock removal, it's most useful property is that it can use a range of 50mm wide belts between 780-1000mm.

I do have plans to build more belt sanding machines, a 2x72 grinder (that would be a metal fabrication project for later), my next machine project might be a 6x48 wooden sander for woodworking purposes, I would probably use plans for this one for that, have a 2.2kw 3-phase motor lying around that would be suitable for this, a bit overkill perhaps:

Thanks for link, but already have a 100mm RJH linisher. Looking for 50mm loose belt type of affair that I can use for curved parts.

I would love to have time to make things (and in this case will probably have too), but so busy with bike work find it very hard to find time. Did find time to make a trolley for my GP2 a couple of weeks ago........with help from Sainsburys...........................
