belt grinder/linisher

inspire me, is basically what this post is getting at

home made only, even if it wasnt you that made it, if you have something not of the masss produced variety, i wanna see it.

ive a need to use up as much of the steel as i can left over from chopping my trailer up, the donkey saw will take some of it, but ive wanted a belt sander/grinder for a while

quite like the spring loaded types that run vertically but a horizontal/flat one wouldnt be a problem

my 2 a - 6 inch and a 4 inch 3/4 hp and a half hp well sufficient

I made mine out of an old shredder motor, heavy duty castor wheel for the drive and home made top roller / tracking adjuster
Works well. I think there are some photos on here somewhere.

I would like a bi vertical at some time.....
BUT I bought this for £25....needed a little fetteling....they couldn't get the belt to track straight....

To me, there is a difference between a belt grinder and a linisher.

A belt grinder would be something the knifemakers use, usually a 2" x 72". A linisher would have a much wider belt (4" or 6").

I may be on the wrong track, but I think that grinders run at a much higher SFM than do linishers.

As the photos above, linishers have a large flat platen below the belt, so there are not so many options for presenting the work to the abrasive - you can only use the roller at the top for non-flat surfaces.

Hence, the work you want to do will influence the correct type of machine for you.

I've got this, its sort of OK but its more of a linisher than a grinder. Its OK for knocking the edges off cut parts and grinding TIG tungstens but if you want to remove larger amounts of metal its not great, even with a 60 grit belt

The platen can be horizontal or vertical



Bought it off a fellow forum member probably 6yrs ago, it had a bit of fire smoke damage so some of the plastic bits were scorched and I made a rest for it

I'd like 1 of the 2 x 72 grinders but dont have the space

There are various plans for 2 x 48 belt grinders that I've been looking at but not taken the plunge yet
