I am embarking on a beetle restoration project and have been kindly lent a FERM 130amp gassed mig welder. I've had about 10 minutes tuition and told the rest I will learn by practice. I was OK on the thicker metal and am now trying my hand at the thinner stuff I am most likely to be welding on the car. Last night I cut some metal from a roof section so that it was the exact guage steel that is on the car, I ground of all paint and rust and practiced for about an hour with various settings. I felt most comfortable with power set to minimum and a wire feed dial set to 3 (any lower and the wire was pulsing out rather than a continuous slow feed). My tacks seemed to coming along OK when doing a butt weld but the fill in weld was blowing holes the majority of the time. Going to keep trying before I blow any bigger holes in the car but just wondered if there are any top tips for a beginner. Sorry if this is a real schoolboy question that's been asked a thousand times but we all have to start somewhere.
