beginner gear

Hi all

I'm knew to this forum so forgive me if I've posted in the wrong section

Basically I've never welded before but as I've thought of a few projects, 1 being buying a clapped out motor and restoring, its about time I learnt!
What would be the best make, type etc to start with? Not looking to spend too much at first. A friend of mine suggested arc (is that stick?) as he's used 1 for a number of years but I've also been told they are difficult to get used to. Just not sure on what type to go for. Mig, tig or arc?

For your requirements MIG is the way to go.

as above you will be much better off buying a Clarke mig, there are gasless models but using gas gives a better weld, if you try arc you will regret it

Are all migs gas then? And What gas would I use?

You can get dual Purpose machines gas and gasless don't use disposable gas bottles they are an expensive way to weld. The gas is argon / co2 mix or pure co2, cheap if you know a pub landlord

Is there anywhere that sells argon / co2 mix at a good price that you could recommend? Sorry for all the questions. First timer

do a search on the forum for gas suppliers, it will be specific to your area, others may be along that can tell you what deals are available

Good luck if you go Stick on old cars, its hard for even the most experienced! No I agree with others get a MIG with a proper re-fillable bottle argon mix gas. Your going to need to get some burn time in before you start on the car. BTW if you don't already have the car just try and buy one that needs the least amount of welding a first project that gets too much is not fun and rusted cars always need a lot more welding than you think on first inspection

And Kent I wont be getting a project car till nearer the end of the year. Gonna pick up some scraps and have go for a couple of months till I get the hang of things then just go on to little odds and sods from there
