Hi,
I haven't got a stick welder at the moment, but I'm planning to get one. My previous experience was using a borrowed hobbyist type transformer welder, making a frame out of square section steel and it seemed to go alright, but I'm probably best considering myself as a complete beginner learning from scratch. On that basis would anyone like to recommend the best type of rods for an absolute beginner to start with, for plain steel work. It'd probably want 2.5 and 3.2mm. Small packs would be better in case I want to try different things, something like 1kg rather than 5kg.
It seems a bit silly asking when I don't yet have the welder, but I want to be ready to go once that decision is made. And from my experience with the borrowed welder, getting suitable rods was the biggest hold up and in the end I had to buy a huge pack as that was all that was available.
I'm saying 2.5 and 3.2 because I will need to run off a 13A or 16A outlet so don't think I can go bigger.
Thanks, Tony S
