off grid would be wonderful. I do manage the fire with the air gate and by switching the fan off for 5 or 10 minutes as needed. I do get a fair bit of clinker but thats down to the quality of the coke, I havew actually found anthracite to work as well if not better than coke, I believe yo only really need the clean fire of coke for welding, anthracite is also half the price of coke....
I too am still very much a learner when it comes to smithing, I struggle to get enough time out in the workshop, having close neighbours doesnt helt matters, I envy your "field" location. Although I dont envy the cost of running the electricity cable out there.
