I choose my jobs and clients now, and have declined two recently.

The person can be as much of a P.I.T.A. as the job.

I was working today (briefly) with the owner, an 82 year old retired GP, boat nutter, lovely couple.

I'll put up some boring photos in a bit.

So today a porous head gasket on a BMC, 1.8, or Leyland 1800, diesel, marinised, in a boat.

Look at the fabulous shimming of the alternator, must remove alternator to avoid breaking heater plug.

Head off, one of the stud things had rusted onto the cylinder head, slowed me down.

Yep, it's still in the boot of the car.

Left at 9am, clients paid lunch, left at 6pm home 50 minutes later, if I hadn't gone by a pal's for a pint.

I think they had those diesel BMC B series in tractors as well.
I've done quite a few mgb engines, did a full build once, steel seats gas flowed etc. On startup I did my usual check the oiling of the top end, to see the slow build up of a water droplet between a pair of valves, then another, and another - dam and blast, that was where the water marks on the crank had come from then. Had to do a new head...

I would skim the head. Steel incerts in the head? Need to have it ground.

Calcutt boats restore bmc,s loads of spares in stock.. handy to know.

If they were anything like the A series its a waste of time skimming heads if the block isnt flat, i have had two 1098 bocks that had a habit of blowing gaskets between 3 & 4 cylinders both were dished side to side by quite a considerable amount. It was noticeable how they had pulled up round the studs.
