Been offered lucrative work I don't want to do ???

Well as of today, I'm on holiday for a fortnight. All good.

Some lass, friend of a friend, asked me to change the oil seals on a Volvo Penta sail drive, fairly easy job, now it has suddenly become that and engine out and change rubber skirt. But judging by her photos, it all looks inaccessible, I'm tempted to run away it's over an hour away, and I really don't fancy it. Or it'll be very expensive...

Well it's gone from a straight forward job, to a pain in the **** job.

She could just pay the company who've pulled her boat out, but that'll be 3x what I'll charge. But I'm verging on not wanting to get involved, it's not something I've done in years, and it's stinks.

Those Volvo sail drives can be a royal pain, the rubber skirt seal keeps the sea out & should be changed at regular intervals. Some boats it wasnt a priority & didnt get done. A lot would depend on how old the boat & installation is. But two boats with those in in our club have or will cost their owners dear. One had an MD5 diesel driving it, It got a cracked head & it cost a fortune in parts, then the block rotted through & it was toast. Owner ripped the whole thing out & fitted an outboard.
Another boat fitted with one (Seawolf 26) needs a new seal, that boat the builders fitted the sail drive first & then built everything round it. I have never seen a more pox ridden innacessible engine in all my days. Everyone who looks at it has walked away. I dont blame them!
Personally the company who pulled the boat out charge 3x for a reason If you are charging a third of their price you are ripping yourself off.

Other aspect is do the boatyard that hauled it out even allow outside contractors? Many yards dont allow them & if they do want a piece of the action anyway. Not worth getting involved with deals like that.

If there is no " other " reason for doing it just say say sorry but I'm on holiday. Question would she give up a days holiday to do a job which she doesn't want to do.
Also take the Registered Charity " sign over your front door down.

I'm skint and 5-600 would be appreciated but it's the hassle factor, and I'm just tempted to runaway.

You just know that the slightest issue, real or imaginary, anywhere else on that boat will now be your fault and you'll be doing that hour drive more times, and taking time off your paid job to do so . . . Go on holiday!

Really don't do it - you don't want to now, wait until you'r 3 days in and burning your days off, with work you should be doing at home..
Every job like this I've done is memorable - for the pain, the regret, the things that went wrong, and on and on.

And 30 seconds after you've told her you can't do it you will feel unbeleavably good...

When you get a job you don't want to do, you can always put in a ridiculously high quote.

If they decline it, then you won't be disappointed and you can mentally tell yourself you didn't turn down the work - no "what-if" regrets.
If they accept it, at least you know you'll be minting it for the hassle factor which will take some of the sting out of it when your cursing the job.
